In 2010 I wrote a blog post (here) about this true story – the murder of Chrissie Venn – using the facts from the story as a basis for drama, storytelling, poetry and writing in different forms.
That post is one of the most commented upon posts on the blog (46 approved comments), and has had over 4000 visits. In the comments there are additional poems, spooky tales, ghost stories, speculation, and blame targeted at a suspect who also happens to be an ancestor of one of the people commenting! Its fascinating to see how the story has given way to folklore. Another interesting comment comes from Lucy Smith, one of the authors, who corrects some misunderstandings, discusses the research process behind the book, and shares the harassment and legal threats she and her husband (co-author) have faced since publication. Although the book Chrissie Venn: Suffer Little Children is out of print, Lucy stated that a new edition will be forthcoming soon. There are other accounts of the murder online – wikipedia, a newspaper report from 24th March, 1921, and a newspaper report from 26th March, 1921.
