An Undone Fairytale

undone fairy tale

I was preparing a lecture on metafiction and postmodern fiction and came across this fabulous picture book! The images depict “the illustrator of the book” within the story, painting each double page spread as though in real time as the reader is reading the story, and he is unable to keep pace with the reader. This results in images half completed, a cross illustrator, a dragon in the shower because he’s not ready for his performance in the narrative, and a lot of stern words addressing the reader and asking them not to read so fast. It is brilliant! I came across this video of the author reading the story to a group of children:

Ian Lendler at Kranky Kids
