Also, I find that tools like Tweetbar (for Firefox) and Twitterific (for my Mac) are invaluable in helping me to keep up with the ambient activity. I've gone through the issue with people not following me. I follow Suw, for instance, and I'm pretty sure that she hasn't added me. If you reply using the @ syntax, it will show up in their Replies tab anyway, even if it doesn't appear in their main screen.
